7-14 Days In Greece - Mainland

Athens

What is more iconic than the Acropolis? No amount of documentaries, pictures, or websites could prepare us for the sheer awe of this rich historical site. To say standing at the foot of the Parthenon was life-changing is not an overstatement. This unforgettable site is a must on your mainland Greece itinerary!

Other must-see sites include the Ancient & Roman Agoras, with the Temple of Hephaestus being a particular gem, as well as the staggeringly impressive Temple of Olympian Zeus.

There are a myriad of Museums, including the National Archeological Museum and the Acropolis Museum, both which are considered some of the best in the world.

Plaka, or the "Old Town" is one of the oldest, continually inhabited cities on Earth and you will feel as if you have stepped into a storybook with it's quintessentially Greek cobble streets and endless shops and tempting restaurants. We particularly were impressed with the beautiful jewelry, and learned that Greece is rich in Silver and offers exceptionally well-crafted items.

In addition to Plaka, Anafiotika is just a short walk to the base of the Acropolis and gives off an authentic Greek Island feel.

Outside of its immense historical offerings, Athens offers an eclectic blend of other activities, including several excellent beaches on the Athens Riviera, only a short 30-45 minute trip, which even in the Winter and Spring time can be quite pleasant, especially if you hail from the Northern United States or Canada!

The Market in Monastiraki is a must-visit and you can stroll for hours looking at the beautiful, local crafts and offerings, including everything from jewelry, to art, to souvenirs, and everything in between!

If nightlife is on your travel Bingo card, there are a plethora of exciting rooftop bars, dance clubs, and tavernas, offering everything from wine and cocktails and dancing, to gourmet, world-class dining. We found out the Greeks are actually outstanding vintners and Greek wine rivels the best wines from France!

Delphi

This site has been steeped in myth and mystery for millennia's. Delphi has been inspiring pilgrimage from all corners of the world for thousands of years, people trekking to visit the Oracle, a high priestess who delivered cryptic messages to travelers from the Greek god Apollo.

In addition to its beautiful and extensive ruins, this site sits nestled in the mountains and offers spectacular views. There is also a lovely museum, and the trip takes you through the mountain village of Arachova, on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, where you can stop for a delicious meal and a view that will etch in your memory forever.

The Peloponnese

The Peloponnese is a mountainous peninsula in southern Greece, connected to the mainland by the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and the Rion-Antirion Bridge. It is a historically rich region famous for ancient sites like Olympia, Epidaurus, Ancient Corinth, and Mycenae, as well as the birthplace of the Olympic Games. The peninsula's rugged, diverse landscapes include mountain gorges, valleys, miles of orange and almond groves, and distinct peninsulas that jut into the sea.

Meteroa

Meteora refers to a UNESCO World Heritage Site in central Greece, famous for its towering sandstone rock formations topped with historic Orthodox monasteries. The name "Meteora" means "suspended in the air," a fitting description for the monasteries perched high on the pillars. Visitors can explore these active monasteries, hike the ancient trails, and witness the breathtaking natural beauty that blends with deep spiritual significance and rich history, including their role as a refuge during Ottoman and Nazi rule.

Cape Sounion - Temple of Poseidon

The views at Cape Sounion are as breathtaking as the ruins are impressive. This is a site which is best enjoyed at sunset, a sight that will not disappoint or be easily forgotten. It is just a quick 1 hour drive from Athens.

Lodging

Comfort, class, convenience - complete with a spectacular view...

This 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom 2nd floor Penthouse apartment offers stunning views of the Acropolis from one balcony and the Aegean Sea and mountains off another. The master offers a comfortable King-size bed on the top floor, a queen occupies the 2nd bedroom on the lower floor. A fully stocked gourmet kitchen makes dining-in a pleasure - I particularly enjoyed having the kitchen balcony open while I prepared meals. This penthouse has a charming glass floor and a floating staircase, which gives it an almost magical aura.

But the real highlight of this apartment is the private hot tub on the rooftop patio, which has a direct line of site to the Acropolis. I can tell you, that sitting in this hot tub sipping a delicious local Greek wine and looking out on a lit-up Parthenon will be an experience you will never forget.

The apartment is located in the suburb of Gazi, just a quick taxi ride or a 20 minute walk from Plaka (Old Town) and the heart of the Athens historical sites such as the Acropolis Museum. We felt very safe, even walking around at night. The owner is friendly, responsive, and helpful.
